The 2020 Tokyo summer Olympics saw Ghanaian boxer Samuel Takyi win the first Olympic medal for Ghana after 29 years. 20-year-old Samuel Takyi ended Ghana’s 29 year wait for an Olympic medal with a deserving victory against Colombian boxer David Avila Ceiber in the featherweight division of the Olympic boxing event in Tokyo.

Ghana, the most peaceful country in West Africa, is blessed with numerous boxing talents. In recent years, lethal Ghanaian boxers like Richard Commey and Isaac Dogbe are putting Ghana on the world map.

According to Olympics.com, Samuel Takyi defeated Colombian fighter David Ceiber in the quarter-finals, which means he’s won a bronze medal at least, next he’ll fight in the semi-final for a shot at gold.

Samuel Takyi has won his Olympic quarter-final to guarantee himself a medal at Tokyo 2020, a first Olympic medal for a Ghanaian athlete in 29 years.

Takyi beat Colombia’s 32-year-old southpaw David Ceiber Avila, a far more experienced fighter, in the quarter-final, taking two of three rounds to send the Ghanaian contingent in the stands wild.

Similar celebrations were happening across Ghana on a historic day in the ring, and they may get louder as Takyi moves on to the semi final where he’ll face the USA’s Ragan Duke.

Ghana’s gold-medal threat Samuel Takyi will try to defeat USA’s Duke Ragan to secure the ultimate trophy.

Three of Ghana’s four Olympic medals have come in boxing with Clement Quartey winning a silver in 1960, Eddie Blay and Prince Amartey claimed bronzes at the 1964 and 1972 Games respectively.

Takyi’s medal will be the only one for Africa in men’s boxing in Tokyo; the BBC said.

The only other African boxer with a chance of a medal is Algeria’s Imane Khalif in the women’s lightweight division she faces Ireland’s Kellie Harrington in Tuesday’s quarter-finals with the winner guaranteed at least a bronze.

The Samuel Takyi Olympic medal is also the fourth at the games for Ghana in the boxing event, with Takyi joining the illustrious group of Clement Quartey – 1960- Silver, Eddie Blay – 1964- Bronze and Prince Amartey – 1972 – Bronze, as the only men to ever win Ghana an individual olympic medal.

The 20-year-old started the bout on the wrong foot as he was overwhelmed by the experienced Colombian boxer, Ávila Ceiber who got all five judges scoring for him.

The second round was much better by Samuel Takyi who used his height to his advantage; catching his 31-year-old opponent off-guard regularly to get three judges scoring for him.

And when it mattered most, the Ghanaian delivered in his Olympic Games debut.

He kept his calm while delivering some perfect punches on Ceiber Segura, who kept on winding down the clock with some shrewd tactics.

Conor McGregor Suffers Big Defeat to Dustin Poirier; Walks Away with a Broken Leg /getty images

Dustin Poirier has beaten Conor McGregor with a TKO in UFC 264 after McGregor appears to have broken his leg/ankle. Conor McGregor sustained a leg break in a shattering defeat to Dustin Poirier in UFC 264.

A report from Sky Sports fears that Conor McGregor’s future is in doubt after a freak leg break in his defeat to Dustin Poirier; the former UFC two-weight champion will spend an extended period on the sidelines, with no guarantee he will ever come back.

BBC confirmed Conor McGregor was sensationally defeated for the second time in two fights after breaking his leg at UFC 264 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The Irishman, 32, was stopped after the first round against former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier.

Replays showed his ankle rolling over as he stepped backwards seconds before the end of the round and the fight was stopped by doctors, handing Poirier a second straight win in their trilogy.

“This is not over,” McGregor said.

“If I have to take it outside, let’s take it outside,” he added as he was interviewed while sat on the canvas with his ankle strapped in a protective cast, before being taken out of the ring on a stretcher.

UFC president Dana White said after the fight that McGregor had broken the lower tibia in his left shin.

McGregor had defeated Poirier via first-round TKO at UFC 178 in 2014, but the American, also 32, evened the score with a second-round TKO at UFC 257 in January.

It meant the rivalry was perfectly poised heading into their trilogy bout in Las Vegas, and it was Poirier who emerged victorious in unfortunate circumstance.

Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier fight: what actually happened?

The action started fast and furious as McGregor switched his tactics from the second fight and opened up with a succession of kicks.

But Poirier kept his cool and, after fending off McGregor’s early attacks, pushed forward with a flurry of punches before eventually forcing the action against the cage.

McGregor attempted to surprise Poirier with a guillotine choke, but the American stayed calm and escaped before punishing McGregor with heavy punches and elbows from top position.

And, when the fight returned to the feet, both men attempted to throw huge shots, with McGregor rolling his ankle when stumbling backward. Poirier then poured on the pressure in search of a finish, but the Irishman was saved by the buzzer.

However, it quickly became apparent that McGregor had suffered a serious injury, with replays showing the Irishman’s leg breaking as he stepped backward.

How many times has Cornor Mcgregor fought Dustin Poirier?

According to CNN, the two men had faced off twice before and talked a lot of trash in the lead-up to the match at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, but Poirier came out on top in the short contest.

“This is not over! If I have to take this outside with him, I’ll go outside,” McGregor said after the match, still sitting in the octagon as trainers inspected his lower left leg.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan told McGregor that Poirier said he believed that his check of one of McGregor’s kicks is what broke his leg.

“There was no check!” McGregor insisted, then launching into a string of insults directed toward Poirier.
After the match, Poirier said he wished he’d gotten a stoppage by strikes, but “a win is a win.”
“I felt like I was control of the fight and I feel like his leg is the result a defensive move, me checking it, a kick,” he said.

McGregor (22-6) and Poirier (28-6) are longtime rivals. In 2014, McGregor defeated Poirier at UFC 178 with a first-round KO.

But in January, Poirier got his revenge at UFC 257 with a second-round finish.
UFC President Dana White told reporters after the match that McGregor would be having surgery soon, and announced he intends to schedule a fight between Poirier and Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title.

What is Conor McGregor’s future after career-ending leg break?

What’s next for both men?
For Poirier, a lightweight title shot with undisputed 155-pound champion Charles Oliveira awaits, with the Brazilian in attendance in Las Vegas.

McGregor’s future looks less certain, however.

The nature of his injury means it may be some time before he is back to fighting fitness again. But, once he is ready to return, his star power means he will still have plenty of options in front of him.

The Irishman remains the UFC’s biggest box office draw, but after four stoppage defeats from his last seven bouts – and only one win at lightweight in the UFC – the UFC will need him to defeat a legitimate contender to position him for a potential shot at the lightweight belt.

However, McGregor could opt to pursue another trilogy fight with the first man to defeat him inside the octagon, Nate Diaz, while a bout against “BMF” champion Jorge Masvidal may also offer the type of stylistic match-up the Dubliner would likely relish.

Ghanaian Boxer Richard Commey Knocks Out Jackson Marinez

In mid-February 2021, Ghanaian Boxer Richard Commey Knocks Out Jackson Marinez.

Commey returned to the winner’s circle with a tremendous KO victory over Jackson Marinez on Saturday and looked as good as he did before his loss to Teofimo Lopez 14 months ago.

With theory, Commey gets back into title contention, but should he fight one of the other champions — specifically one not named Teofimo — next?

Commey’s eye-opening knockout win over Jackson Marinez was the perfect start to his efforts to climb back up the ranks, but he probably needs a couple more solid wins to regain the momentum needed for another title shot.

Ghanaian Boxer Richard Commey Knocks Out Jackson Marinez

Former lightweight titleholder Richard Commey bounced back big in his first fight since 2019, knocking out Jackson Marinez in a late notice main event tonight on ESPN.

Commey (30-3, 27 KO) announced that he certainly isn’t going to fade out of contention at 135 pounds just yet, picking up a solid win that keeps the 33-year-old Ghanaian in the mix in one of boxing’s hottest divisions.

He was also supported by the man who beat him last time we saw Commey, which of course is Teofimo Lopez.

The win, again, keeps Commey in the mix at lightweight, though a title fight may be hard to come by soon.

Lopez holds the WBA, IBF, and WBO belts, as well as whatever claim you want to consider to the WBC belt, while Devin Haney has whatever other claim to the WBC belt, and Gervonta Davis has the WBA’s secondary belt.

Commey doesn’t have the big star power, but in all honesty he’d be by far a career-best opponent for Haney.
