The Future of Kyrie Irving: Could He Don an Aussie Jersey?

Kyrie Irving, born down under in Melbourne, has made a splash representing Team USA throughout his career. However, at the recent All-Star Game, the Dallas Mavericks star hinted at a potential pivot to the Australian national team, leaving fans buzzing with excitement.

Irving’s Winning Credentials

Kyrie Irving knows how to win. With a shiny gold medal from the 2016 Olympics and a World Cup trophy from 2014 already in his collection, he has cemented his status as a force on the international stage. His game translates seamlessly to FIBA play, making him a versatile threat on any court, whether it’s hardwood or blacktop.

A Hint of Change at the All-Star Game

During the All-Star festivities, Irving was put on the spot by a journalist about the possibility of representing Australia in the 2028 Olympics. His response? Clear and decisive.

“Right now, we’re in the process of figuring out what the best path looks like for me. There’s a lot of administrative work involved to be eligible. Of course, Team USA has a say in my situation, but I’m trying to do what’s best for me. Honestly, if I get the chance to be an Aussie at some point in my career and play for Australia, that would be incredible.”

Team World or Team USA?

In the same breath, the journalist asked which team he would represent if the All-Star Game morphed into a Team USA vs. Team World showdown:

“I’d pick Team World for the sake of competition. But I’ll always have a bond with my Team USA guys—we’ve shared so much. I’m just grateful to be able to embrace both sides. Born in Australia, raised in the U.S.”

A Potential Transition

While Irving’s words suggest he might be leaning toward a switch, his position has evolved from earlier this year when he spoke to The Athletic with more caution:

“I’d like to consider the idea of playing for Australia. While it doesn’t seem like a solid option right now, as a competitor born in Australia, the transition wouldn’t be hard.”

The Legal Playbook

Legally, changing national teams mid-career is feasible for Irving. According to FIBA Article 3-22, he can make the switch if it’s to “promote the development of basketball” in a new country. He’ll need a valid passport, the green light from FIBA, and approval from the new country’s federation. Plus, he can’t have suited up for any other national team in high-level competitions over the past three years.

What Lies Ahead?

With most of the criteria achievable, the big question remains: is Australia a nation that needs “developing” when it comes to basketball? The answers may unfold in the coming months and years.
