San Francisco: A Hotbed for Epic All-Star Games

For the third time in NBA history, the All-Star Game touches down in San Francisco! This is the perfect moment to look back at the past two iconic showdowns that brought unforgettable moments to basketball fans.

1967: The Rick Barry Showdown

The 1967 All-Star Game found its home at the Cow Palace in Daly City. While technically not in San Francisco, it’s close enough! Just like the Stade de France is often considered part of Paris, the Cow Palace is embraced by the city’s spirit.

Fast forward to 1967, and we’re served up a roster that boasts legendary talent. An astounding 13 of the 20 players in the game made the cut on the NBA’s list of the 50 greatest players of all time released in 1996.

Among the big names were Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, and the young sensation Rick Barry.

At just 22 years old, Barry lit up the arena! Despite being a sophomore, he stole the spotlight from all the established legends.

He dropped a jaw-dropping 38 points and took a record 27 shots, a mark that held strong until 2022 when Stephen Curry unleashed 22 three-pointers in a single game.

Barry led the West to a 135-120 victory and was rightfully named MVP of the night. What a debut!

2000: The Dual MVP Showdown

As we ushered in the year 2000, the NBA headed to Oakland – once again, not quite San Francisco – at the Oracle Arena. The star-studded lineup included Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Tim Duncan. But it was the latter two who took center stage.

Once more, the West asserted dominance over the East with a 137-126 victory. Shaq flexed his muscles with a solid 22 points and 9 rebounds while Tim Duncan delivered a crushing 24 points and 14 boards.

In a remarkable twist, the NBA couldn’t decide who deserved the MVP crown, leading to both players sharing the honor. This marked the third time in history that it happened!

But that wasn’t it for these two giants. In 2009, Shaq and his nemesis, Kobe, shared the MVP title once more, making Shaq the only player to have two shared MVP trophies from the All-Star Game. Talk about epic!

The All-Star games in the San Francisco Bay have become synonymous with historical moments. Let’s hope the 2025 edition keeps that legacy going strong!
