Philadelphia’s own 76ers have officially received the green light to construct a new arena named “76 Place at Market East,” set to shake things up by 2031.
According to ESPN, the Philadelphia City Council voted 12-5 in favor of the project, which comes with a jaw-dropping $1.3 billion price tag. This marks a major turning point for the franchise, which has been eagerly waiting to break free from the Wells Fargo Center, where they are contracted until 2031.
Breaking Ground or Still on Hold?
Despite the council’s approval, the journey to construction has been anything but smooth. The Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment group, which owns the Sixers, has faced a few hurdles along the way. Residents from the nearby Chinatown area have expressed concerns regarding the new development, prompting Mayor Cherelle Parker to listen to their voices while also promoting the economic benefits the project could bring to Philadelphia as a whole.
What to Expect from the New Venue
When completed, the new arena will seat 18,500 fans, hosting the action-packed games of the Sixers. If all goes according to plan, it will open its doors for the 2031-32 season—just in time for the franchise’s superstar, Joel Embiid, to hopefully push beyond the conference semifinals!
