In a swirling cocktail of nostalgia and excitement, Vince Carter—NBA legend and recent Hall of Famer—returns to Oakland for the 2025 All-Star Weekend. This time he’s on the sidelines as a TNT consultant, ready to relive the glory of his iconic Slam Dunk Contest victory 25 years ago!
Vince Carter: A Legacy Revisited
Vince Carter has had quite the run in the world of basketball. Recent weeks have been a whirlwind as his jersey was retired first by the Raptors and then the Nets. To top it off, VC has just joined the prestigious Hall of Fame, punctuating a storied career that spanned four decades and saw him tie with LeBron James for the all-time record of 22 NBA seasons.
But amidst the accolades and milestones, one moment stands out above all others: his unforgettable victory at the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest in Oakland. Fans who witnessed it live have vivid memories—the kind that stick with you for a lifetime. And those who have watched the highlights realized they were witnessing something truly spectacular.
The Moment of a Lifetime
After a two-year hiatus from the dunk contest, Carter stormed the stage, delivering a display of explosive athleticism that left fans breathless. Who could forget that jaw-dropping 360 windmill dunk that silenced the crowd and crushed any remaining suspense? “Let’s go home! Let’s go home!” shouted Kenny Smith, capturing the electric atmosphere. There was also the exhilarating bounce pass dunk set up by his cousin, Tracy McGrady. “It’s over, ladies and gentlemen,” echoed through the arena. And then, the pièce de résistance: a dunk with his elbow in the rim that rendered legends like Shaquille O’Neal and Steve Francis utterly speechless.
Returning to the Scene of the Crime
Fast forward 25 years, and Vince is back in the Bay Area for the All-Star Weekend—this time to relive the magic as a consultant. The event returns to San Francisco for the first time since 2000, and Carter wouldn’t miss it for the world.
VC will kick things off by covering the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday at the Oakland Arena, then he’ll shift gears to lend his commentary to the dunk contest Saturday at the Chase Center, before diving into the All-Star Game action on Sunday!
An Emotional Homecoming
“One of the greatest moments of my life was All-Star Saturday Night on February 12, 2000. It’ll be really cool to come back to the city where it all happened. People knew me already, but I took it to another level that night,” said Carter, reflecting on his monumental achievement.
“A little over two decades later, we’re still talking about it (the Dunk Contest 2000). I could never have imagined that. I just wanted to go out there and put on a show, to be part of history. My dream was to hold that trophy, and it’s really cool that we’re still talking about it. Really cool.” – Vince Carter
Reviving the Dunk Contest
Since the unforgettable showdown between Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine in 2016, the Dunk Contest has struggled to recapture its former glory. However, Vince Carter is determined to reignite excitement around the event—not through dunks, but by providing expert analysis alongside Kenny Smith, Kevin Harlan, Reggie Miller, and Allie LaForce on TNT.
Despite the underwhelming participant list this year (Mac McClung, Stephon Castle, Andre Jackson Jr., Matas Buzelis), Carter believes the 2025 Dunk Contest has the potential to be a memorable one.
“I had the chance to talk to the four competitors. During our chat, I was inspired by their hunger to compete and put on a show. That’s what’s been missing from the contest,” expressed Carter.
“I’ll be front and center watching these four guys, who have a chance to make history.” – Vince Carter
Will It Be Worth the Hype?
Let’s hope he’s right. It would be a shame to see another lackluster Dunk Contest, especially 25 years after Vinsanity gave us a masterclass in Dunking!
