Euro 2020: 5 Key Questions Southgate Must Answer on England’s Struggles

Published

on

The questions are swirling around the England camp as Gareth Southgate looks to kick-start what has been a stuttering Euro 2020 campaign so far. As the English national team boss, Southgate is under fire to utilise the strength of his squad to give England a competitive edge in the European championship.

The drab Scotland draw dampened the excitement after a gritty 1-0 win over Croatia and to assuage any fears in the camp that England have lost their way, Southgate has shown the squad examples of other teams who have overcome a slow start to win previous tournaments.

Furthermore, he gave a major vote of confidence to Harry Kane by announcing on Sunday that the England captain will start against Czech Republic on Tuesday despite his woeful form so far. So how does Southgate get the best out of his talisman? And where else should he stick, and where should he twist? Let’s assess the big decisions.

It’s Time to Think Twice about Overrated Harry Kane and Unleash Sancho

The Golden Boot winner of the 2018 World Cup has looked flat, out of confidence and even lacking match sharpness in England’s two games so far. He has been taken off in both matches and against Scotland, was fortunate to be on the field for as long as 74 minutes before being replaced by Marcus Rashford.

But as Kane starts on Tuesday, scrutiny immediately falls to those around him. In the first two games, Kane has been backed up by Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Phil Foden; it feels inevitable that something will change there for the final group game.

England Struggles in Euro 2020

Clamour is growing for Borussia Dortmund livewire Jadon Sancho – the man Manchester United will likely spend the best part of £100m on – to finally be unleashed. If the tournament had gone ahead 12 months ago, Sancho and Sterling would have been nailed-on starters in a 4-3-3 around Kane.

Is that something Southgate could be tempted to return to?

Southgate is an admirer of Rashford as well – and has turned to the United man off the bench in both of England’s group games so far.

Rashford is comfortable on a flank of a three-man attack and Southgate might feel a more natural forward, rather than three attacking midfielders, might help Kane feel more supported and bring him into the game a bit more naturally.

Jack Grealish in Midfield

There was an amusing moment in the Scotland match where the camera cut to Grealish tying his shoelace on the bench before getting ready to warm up. The Wembley crowd erupted in cheers and Grealish was visibly trying not to smile in recognition and maintain focus – but a small grin was there for all to see.

Everyone is desperate to see Grealish start from the off. If Southgate keeps the current 4-2-3-1 formation, then he’s a contender to come in for one of Mount, Sterling and Foden. It was a curious, and unpopular, decision by Southgate to take Foden off for Grealish against Scotland.

Alternatively, Grealish could play in a midfield three if Southgate switches to a 4-3-3 setup, as could Mount as the more attacking one of the trio. Both are appealing options. Mount is appearing alongside Southgate at a media conference on Monday to preview the Czech Republic match – a sign his place in the line-up is safe?

England’s Midfield Axis

Could Jude Bellingham gatecrash the party? Kalvin Phillips was excellent in the opening game against Croatia and there are no qualms about Declan Rice’s abilit.  But against Scotland, did England need them of both on the pitch when they were chasing a winner in the second half?

The excitement around Bellingham is entirely justified – he already looks a resplendent player – but Southgate is protective of his younger squad members and Bellingham doesn’t turn 18 until June 29. But he has big-game experience from playing in the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund, which is something Phillips and Rice haven’t yet had.

Bellingham, who replaced Kane in the Croatia match, looks a better fit if Southgate does switch to a 4-3-3. In turn, Phillips and Rice would vie for the defensive midfield role.

Alternatively, Southgate could keep the 4-2-3-1 setup and plump for Jordan Henderson. In some respects, it would be a bold move to start the Liverpool captain considering he has played just 45 minutes of football since going off with a groin injury in Liverpool’s February defeat by Everton.

But he’s one of the most experienced members of the squad and has been there and done it with Champions League and Premier League wins to his name. That know-how can be vital as the tournament progresses.

Harry Maguire

Bring Slab-head Harry Maguire to the Backline?

The Henderson conundrum in midfield repeats itself in defence, where Manchester United’s Harry Maguire is back to training after an ankle injury. He appears to at least be in contention to feature against the Czechs but throwing him straight back in to a game England really can’t afford to lose might seem too much of a risk to Southgate.

But if not now, then when? Like Henderson, Maguire’s experience is vital for England. Yet England’s defence hasn’t really been an issue – Tyrone Mings, who is replacing Maguire, has been solid in England’s first two matches and the defence is yet to concede in the tournament.

Had England beaten Scotland and sealed their place in the last-16, Southgate would likely have viewed this final group game as a perfect setting for Maguire and Henderson to get minutes in the tank. But now, it would be a greater risk.

Changes at at Full-Back

Southgate took Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker out for Luke Shaw and Reece James against Scotland. Starting a left-back at left-back was a welcome move as, through no fault of his own, Trippier struggled to convince out of position against Croatia. One would expect Shaw, who had an excellent season at Manchester United, will remain there.

But right-back is a different case. Southgate rates Walker, who even plays on the right of a central defence in a 3-5-2 setup, and could be tempted to return him in place of James, who failed to capture his best form in the Scotland match.

Trippier in his natural position, of course, is also a very strong option to have – he has tournament experience from England’s run to the World Cup semi-final in 2018 and offers a threat with his set-piece delivery as well. Having served Southgate so well in the past, will the England boss be tempted into restoring one of his trusted old soldiers to the team, where a win to kick-start the tournament would be so crucial?

Gareth Southgate to Manchester United Doesnt’ Make Sense

There is NO REASON for Gareth Southgate to be linked with the Manchester United job

Gareth Southgate is the only person in the Universe who can turn Manchester United into Middlesbrough within no time

The English media is trying all their best to push Southgate to united, but he is championship level manager at best

The England national team is waay better than this Manu squad, and he has had 0 success ( reaching semis ain’t success). So what exactly are people expecting if he becomes Manu boss

Absolutely no way! Why would Man U hire Southgate? That would be the worse decision in the history of the game.

ETH outwitted Klopp last weekend in one of the best and most dramatic FA cup clashes in years and I’m sorry but Southgate would not have won that game and ETH has had to deal with Ronaldo, Sancho, Greenwood and so on, he deserves more time

I have been saying this for weeks now. If United were under any other manager especially Southgate, they would be fighting for relegation right now. The problem at United is not Ten Hag but the players.

People keep saying that Ten Hag’s style of football at United is not attractive and no identity but there is so much that a manager can do if the players themselves are not good enough or not putting enough effort. Ten Hag’s Ajax were playing attractive football and he managed to get them to the SF of the CL.

Without him, look at Ajax now. And the media keep pushing their agenda to get Ten Hag sack and replace him with a much worse manager like Southgate. If Ten Hag is managing England right now, with the players they have, we won’t see such a passive football like we saw yesterday vs Brazil. Ask Liverpool fans, would they replace Klopp with Southgate? I rest my case.

Liverpool blame themselves for FA Cup loss to Man United

Liverpool only have themselves to blame for loss to Manchester United. Had to find a way to squeeze in the random Bruno slag off in between. Dude was dead on his feet at full time, and had to slot in to center back for the last 30 minutes.

SportsFila reflect on Manchester United’s 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup Quarterfinals and look ahead to the semifinals where Erik ten Hag’s side will take on Coventry.

How come everybody seems to have forgotten that 2 of LFC’s goals were pure luck?

More shots, same shots on goal, higher goal expectancy. What is this narrative that Liverpool should have put this game away, if anything we should’ve put this game away! They had a good 20, 25 minute stint where they kept the ball in the second half, but did nothing with it, we deservedly won this game.

For Liverpool fans: don’t say that we lost to Manchester United because Jota Trent Alisson and jones didn’t play. We have to stop doing that every time a team loses a big game it’s very stupid because had you won, you wouldn’t be saying that. Don’t forget that when y’all drew 0-0 to them at home Trent Alisson and Jones started. Keep in mind how well they’ve been playing despite having lots of injuries they almost beat Manchester City’s full strength squad last week.

Also, you lose to Manchester United, 2 fringe players for them decided the game for them, Liverpool didn’t play well and a loss is a loss you have to accept it otherwise you’re a sole loser and are unwilling to take it.

It’s interesting how nothing much is said about the mistakes made by Liverpool, but all criticism is piled on Bruno; how supposedly poor he was.

Ten Hag Says Man United Are on Track

Published

Ten Hag claims United is moving in the right direction 👀 WHAT DIRECTION IS THAT?!

Every time he speaks after a dismal performance after the match I always sit there saying to myself “What on Earth are you talking about”.

The media trying so hard to get ETH sacked…..when liverpool had bad injuries with VVD out, y’all didnt have the same energy

Most fans want ETH out because of his poor tactics and substitutions. I also felt he should be braver to drop non-performing players irrespective of names, and even play academy players if he has to.

Now I’m ETH in because I realise from Rooney’s and Ole’s recent interviews that the mentality of these players are incredibly low and it’s no longer just speculation that the players can’t cope on this stage.

I can understand ETH saying positive things and coming off as “crazy” but if you have players who are weak minded and aren’t willing to fight, you can’t be tough cos they’ll cave and where does that leave you for the rest of the season?! Jason Sancho case in point. I rather come across as insane to the media but hope that I’m lifting the team enough to get a string of performances to save my job and give the fans at least something to cheer about until I can have a summer clear out.

Keane is a freaking legend but that approach with these weak players will kill them and ETH would lose the dressing room.

This man keeps dropping off bombs on and off the field..A gift that keeps on giving..Most delulu man on this green earth
What a GIFT! Hand him a 15 years contract and 5 years add ons

The problem for Utd in recruiting an elite manager in the Summer is that Liverpool, Bayern and Barca will also be looking for new managers.

From the moment I heard “A new era begins. .” from ETH. I knew it was the joke of the century. He has the guts to say it while Klopp/Guardiola are competing against each other by 1 point in the Primer league he acted like he can compete with them ro
