Unlike the Euro 2020, the Africa Cup of Nations Tournament is being ‘disrespected’: Ian Wrigth Blasts English/European Media. The rescheduled Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) will take place in Cameroon between January 9 and February 6, 2022, with Sky Sports showing all 52 games live; around 40 Premier League players are set to feature in the tournament.
What is Afcon? The CAF Africa Cup of Nations, officially called CAN or AFCON, or Total Africa Cup of Nations after its headline sponsor, is the main international men’s association football competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and was first held in 1957
Former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright says media coverage of Europe-based players travelling to the Africa Cup of Nations is “disrespectful” and “tinged with racism”.
The 24-team competition begins on January 9 and will feature a host of leading Premier League players, with Sky Sports showing all 52 games live.

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp disrespects AFCon tournament
Mr Jurgen Klopp was asked to apologize for a comment he made about the African Cup of Nations by an angry journalist, after the Liverpool boss sarcastically referred to it as a ‘little tournament in Africa.’
f anyone knows the magnitude of AFCON it is surely Klopp, who will lose two of his best players in the shape of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for up to a month, as well as Naby Keita.

Last week the Liverpool boss was talking about the fact there was no international football again until March, following the November games, until he remembered the tournament in Cameroon.
Sarcastically the Reds boss referred to it as a ‘little tournament,’ but one African reporter was obviously riled up about the description and took the German to task.
Following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Porto on Wednesday night, which featured Thiago’s sumptuous strike, Klopp was called on to apologize by a journalist in the post match press conference, but the 54-year-old explained what he meant in a fiery conversation.

According to Sky Sports, Wright said coverage of the AfCon tournament and the issue of player release during the European season, is in marked contrast to how Euro 2020 was treated.
“Is there ever a tournament more disrespected than the Africa Cup of Nations?” Wright said in a video posted on Instagram.
“There is no greater honour than representing your country. The coverage is completely tinged with racism.
“We played our Euros across 10 countries in the middle of a pandemic and there’s no issue at all. But Cameroon, a single country hosting a tournament, is a problem.”Wright added that he objected to players being asked whether or not they intend to play for their countries.
“You are getting journalists asking players … players getting asked if they will be honouring the call-ups to their national teams. Imagine if that was an English player representing the Three Lions. Can you imagine the furore?”
AFCON 2022: Liverpool will be without Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Guinea’s Naby Keita.
Mohamed Salah will feature for Egypt in Cameroon. Crystal Palace will be missing Wilfried Zaha, Jordan Ayew and Cheikhou Kouyate, but their manager Patrick Vieira said there was no question of trying to persuade them to skip the finals.
“I respect and understand the passion and the importance to players to go and represent their country so I will never stop any player going to play the Africa Cup of Nations,” Vieira said, while calling for media to cover the event more seriously.
Wright said the players and countries deserved more respect.
“Loads of the best players in Europe right now are African,” noted the 58-year-old, who made 33 appearances for England.
“If we love them at club level why can’t we love them at international level like their counterparts across the globe? Why is this tournament constantly getting so much flak?”
Technically, truth be told Africa have a lot of shortcomings but they shouldn’t be disrespected by carrying out that threat. Klopp had already made a remark which didn’t go down well with a lot of people so coming up with this excuse of corona virus and fixture incompatibility will just serve as another fuel to the raging racial fire.
Players whose clubs refuse to release them for AFCON should be barred by FIFA from playing for their clubs throughout the duration of the AFCON tournament. COVID-19 including the latest variant (Omicron) is more prevalent in Europe, yet (except in severe cases) league matches are still going on across Europe. Enough of this hypocrisy. I know that CAF has it shortcomings (many of them) but AFCON is still a very important tournament for Africa. That it is usually held in January/February is because of the weather in Sub-Saharan Africa. European clubs should please bear with us and release any player called up by his country.
Afcon fixtures dates 2022
The Afcon round of 16 takes place from January 23 to January 26, while the quarter-finals are on January 29 and 30.
It is a busy schedule with the semi-finals on February 2 and 3, and the conclusion of the tournament on February 6 with the final and the third-place play-off.

Sunday may not provide the unforgettable drama of 2012’s last day, which saw massive fans’ participation at MT online sportsbooks, when Sergio Aguero’s stoppage-time winner sealed a first Premier League title for City. Newly promoted Leicester City have been charged with breaking spending rules when they were in the top flight (and are now taking legal action against the league), while Chelsea have also been under investigation.
And 16 months after City were charged with more than a hundred rule breaches, a hearing in their case is not thought to be scheduled until the autumn, contributing to the mounting scrutiny of the league’s governance and processes.
While City deny wrongdoing, a sixth league triumph in seven years would only intensify questions over the fairness of how they assembled their squad over several seasons, the time the case has taken, and whether the club’s wealth has distorted the competitiveness of the league, alongside admiration for the team and their coach.
Meanwhile, a split has emerged between clubs over plans to introduce a new spending cap, and the Premier League is facing the threat of more legal action from one of its members over amended rules around associated party transactions.
As if all that was not enough to contend with, the league’s chief executive Richard Masters has also warned of the “unintended consequences” of the forthcoming independent football regulator, amid mounting criticism of the failure by his clubs to agree a new financial settlement with the English Football League (EFL).
The Premier League is also known to be deeply concerned about the increasingly congested calendar, with Masters recently warning of a “tipping point”, after criticism following the scrapping of FA Cup replays. The league has also admitted that the VAR system must improve after a series of controversies.
With the title race going right to the wire, Sunday’s final-day drama will provide a welcome distraction from such matters for Masters and his colleagues – but, one suspects, only a temporary one.
Clock ticking for Commonwealth Games
A few weeks ago in Birmingham, Katie Sadleir, the head of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), told me that any further delay beyond May in announcing a host for the 2026 event would be “very problematic”.
Since then Glasgow has emerged as a possible back-up option if no replacement is found for Victoria in Australia, which pulled out last year, plunging the event into crisis.
But there has still been no official announcement by the CGF.
Insiders claim they remain hopeful a host will be confirmed in the next two weeks, but the clock is ticking.
Super League heading stateside?
The National Rugby League (NRL) season kicked off in the US for the first time in March, with a Premiership double-header staged at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as part of a multi-year deal designed to grow the sport in the US.
So could Super League clubs follow suit?
Talks have taken place over the Club World Challenge being staged in the US, and some Super League bosses are keen on regular season matches being part of the tie-up too.

Afcon 2024 victory is well deserved for Ivory Coast they left no stone unturned and they dominated throughout. If there is a one person who deserved to win the AFCON it was Sebastian Haller. In 2022, he was diagnosed with cancer but he recovered and he returned to play football in 2023 only to bottle the Bundesliga title on the final matchday to Bayern but here we are in 2024 where he scored the winner in the AFCON final to win Cote d’Ivoire AFCON title so congratulations🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🏆
