Kevin Durant: No Other Nation Can Catch Team USA

In a recent chat, NBA superstar Kevin Durant tackled the debate on whether Team USA still reigns supreme in basketball. After snagging another gold medal at the Olympics, KD made it clear: his country still has the edge over the competition.

Is Team USA Still the Gold Standard?

The question on every hoops fan’s lips: Is Team USA still the best basketball nation in the world? Absolutely! With a stellar performance that secured a double gold at the latest Paris Olympics, the answer appears crystal clear. However, the landscape of international basketball is changing, and many observers note that the Americans no longer dominate as they once did. The game is going global, with more international players making waves in the NBA. In fact, the last six MVP awards have gone to non-American players, with Joel Embiid representing Cameroon in the mix.

The Challenge from Abroad

On the FIBA stage, the reality is similar. Gone are the days when Team USA blitzed their opponents by 30-plus points per game like during the Dream Team era. The Americans haven’t claimed a medal at the World Cup since 2014. Yet, when it comes to the Olympics, Uncle Sam’s ballers remain the undisputed champions with an impressive streak of five consecutive gold medals.

A Closer Contest

However, even in Olympic play, the gap isn’t as wide as it once was. Despite boasting rosters packed with superstars and All-Stars, Team USA hasn’t been steamrolling the competition. Serbia put them to the test, and France wasn’t far from pulling off an upset in the finals. These near-misses have sparked discussions about how the gap between the American giants and the international field is narrowing.

KD’s Take: Not So Fast!

But Kevin Durant isn’t buying into the narrative. During his recent appearance on the Out the Mud Podcast with Tony Allen and Zach Randolph, KD fired back, insisting that the other nations are still a step behind the United States.

“Are other countries catching up to Team USA? Of course not. Of course not.”

“We beat Serbia three times this summer. They had one solid game, and France got us once, but we walked away with the gold. We also took down France twice at the last Olympics. Sure, guys like Victor Wembanyama, Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are talented, but you can’t just point to three players and say they’ve closed the gap. A single close game against Serbia doesn’t mean they’re right there with us. I really don’t think they are close.”

“The fact that people are giving credit over just a tight game with us shows they can’t even compete. We created basketball. They’ve been influenced by us. Luka learned from Americans, just like Jokic, Toni Kukoc, Manu Ginóbili, and Tony Parker. Those guys were influenced by us. We set the standard.”
