Thomas Tuchel’s side, who lost Thiago Silva to injury in the 39th minute, were sent on their way just before half-time as Mason Mount’s superb pass picked out the run of Kai Havertz (42), who rounded Ederson and calmly finished into an empty net for his first Champions League goal.
Man City, who picked an extremely attacking line-up, were far from their fluent best and their task was made even more difficult when Kevin De Bruyne was forced off because of a head injury in the 60th minute.
After substitute Christian Pulisic missed a guilt-edged chance to wrap up victory, City turned to Sergio Aguero for one final time, but an equaliser proved elusive as Chelsea, who defended heroically, held on to end their season on a high.
Although Supercomputer predictions touted Manchester City as UCL title favorites, Thomas Tuchel Chelsea Beat Man City 1-0 to Win Champions League Final 2021 in grand style,
The Blues Won their last 3 matches vs Man City all under Thomas Tuchel.
- The victory banished memories of their FA Cup final disappointment earlier this month and seals their first piece of silverware under Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard back in January.
- The Catalan coach (Pep Guardiola’s) 10-year-wait for another European success goes on after he got his line-up badly wrong in Saturday’s 1-0 loss in Porto.
- However, even after a brilliant run to this year’s final, during which City saw off Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, Guardiola couldn’t resist one last tactical tweak.
- Maybe he had too long to prepare for the all-English showdown in Porto, mulling over every possible scenario in his mind.
- Maybe he had tried to second-guess Thomas Tuchel after two losses to Chelsea since the German took charge.
Or maybe it was a vanity project, an attempt to prove his genius.
Whatever the truth, Guardiola’s decision to start without a defensive midfielder backfired spectacularly.
A top-quality performance at both ends of the pitch in Porto did the job in some style with a single Kai Havertz goal deciding the contest and bringing the trophy back to Stamford Bridge for a second time. Chelsea are the only team in London to win the European Cup, and they have won it twice!
Havertz scored the winner with three minutes to go before half-time. The 21-year-old took a superb through-ball by the exceptional Mason Mount beyond Ederson in the Man City goal and stroked it into the net, capping his debut season for the Blues in the best way possible.

Tuchel: Chelsea Can Use This Year’s UEFA Champions League Victory Against Manchester City to Become Better
A smiling Thomas Tuchel was able to reflect on turning Champions League final disappointment last year with PSG into triumph this year with Chelsea after his side got the better of Manchester City for a third meeting in a row.
A Kai Havertz goal decided the final in Porto, and the German was just one of the young players discussed by the head coach shortly after the final whistle.
He immediately set them the task of following this one up with more success, and he also revealed he sensed before the game that this would be his night.
Speaking on how Thomas Tuchel Chelsea Beat Man City 1-0 to Win Champions League Final 2021, the Blues boss said:
‘I was so grateful to arrive here [in the final] a second time. ‘It felt different. I told everybody that before. Somehow we could feel it every day coming closer but we were comfortable.
Tuchel was especially pleased with the rearguard action that kept City at bay as they pressed for an equaliser as the game drew towards its conclusion.
‘We have a strong group who can really defend and defending is a huge part of football. They have a huge energy together and they can deliver under pressure.
So this sets the level for us and once the celebrations are over, and we have all digested this experience, it’s the moment to grow, to evolve, and to use it to become better.
‘A lot of young players had this huge success and now it’s a big challenge to stay hungry and to go for the next one.’
