Barca record goal-scorer and club legend Lionel Messi has verbally agreed to sign a new 5-year Barcelona contract with a whopping 50% pay cut. This comes after the Argentine GOAT guided his country to a deserving Copa America 2021 victory.
The same Leo Messi came close to departing the Nou Camp last summer after handing in a transfer request but he could have only left if his €700m release clause was met by another club like oil-rich ManCity.
The Argentina forward’s salary will be reduced by 50 per cent under the terms of the new deal, Sky Sports reported.
Barca President Laporta signed Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero and Emerson have this summer, but these new arrivals have been unable to be officially registered due to Barca’s bloated wage bill.

Barcelona captain Messi is set to hand president Joan Laporta a huge boost by agreeing to a 50 per cent wage cut.
Several sources claim that the 34-year-old has agreed to the reduction in wages and will sign a five-year deal.
It is suggested that an official confirmation is imminent and that only bureaucracy is stopping an announcement.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was officially a free agent as of July 1 after he failed to agree terms over a renewal before his previous Barcelona contract expired on June 30.
Earlier in July, Messi led Argentina to the Copa America title thanks to a 1-0 win in the final against hosts Brazil, bringing an end to his wait for a first major international trophy.
How old will Messi be when his new contract runs out?
The 34-year-old has now agreed to stay on at his boyhood club for another five years, meaning he will be 39 by the time his new deal runs out – when he will have totalled 26 years on the club’s books.
Messi sparked an acrimonious transfer row in August last year, when he officially informed the club his wish to activate a clause in his contract which would have seen him leave for free.
Just last summer, Messi threatened to leave after Barcelona were beaten 8-2 in the Champions League by ruthless Bayern Munich. However, La Liga president Javier Tebas and Josep Maria Bartomeu – Barcelona president at the time – blocked the move, indicating that the clause was only active until June 10 and any suitor would have to pay his €700m release clause in full.

“He (Messi) is very happy, and so are we”, Laporta said as per reports from Marca.

“Messi’s contract renewal as progressed adequately.”
Laporta remained tight lipped over the details of their contract offer to Messi, but the club is likely to open negotiations with a two year deal, with the option of a third season from 2023.

Catalan club FC Barcelona’s financial situation is so bad that it cannot register key player Lionel Messi or any of its new signings in its squad unless it offloads a number of its highest earners like Griezmann and Dembele.
According to Goal.com, the Catalan club have exceeded La Liga’s strict salary limit and needs to reduce its wage bill by €200 million ($237 million) per year in order to register Messi and summer signings Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, and Emerson Royal with the league.
Messi, who is a free agent after his contract expired, remains in talks over a new deal.

Manchester United have vowed to “continue to offer its support” to Mason Greenwood after the striker sealed a loan move away from Old Trafford on deadline day.
Greenwood, 21, hasn’t played professional football since his arrest in January 2022. Charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against the forward were dropped seven months ago.

Mason Greenwood Fans Blast Man Utd Club for Rejecting Talent
All charges were dropped this February but the Old Trafford outfit said Greenwood would leave the club last week.
And now La Liga club Getafe have completed a last minute season-long loan deal for Greenwood, subject to international clearance.
The Spanish club play away at Real Madrid tomorrow afternoon, although it is unlikely he will be registered in time.
Greenwood is likely to make his debut for Getafe on September 17 when they play Osasuna.
United will reportedly receive no loan fee for Greenwood and are said to be covering the majority of his wages.
The Madrid-based side will also cover a small contribution for his wages for the duration of the loan.
A United club statement read: “The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.
“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.
